It’s Relentless, Isn’t It?
At this point in time there is a unique collision between two technology cultures: high definition video culture, and low quality web video culture. It’s Relentless Isn’t It? is a single channel video that explores the visual qualities of the two. By comparing the crisp clarity of High Definition video with the textured pixelation of low quality video within the same frame, attention is drawn to the meaning of certain subjects within the scene.
Contrast between long drawn-out shots, and quick machine gun edits creates tension and relief. The comparison between the two video layers demonstrates the fact that the digital image is channeled through the technology with which it is shot. The same moment can be interpreted as something greatly different, depending on the technology with which it was captured. The camera is not honest; it is a subjective eye.
In the medium of video, as new technology develops, the style of outdated mediums becomes coveted and beautiful soon after it becomes obsolete. After being replaced by digital video, the aesthetic of analog television became favorable for its nostalgic texture. With the growing popularity of high definition video, the use of low quality video texture is on the threshold of becoming a stylistic choice. The textures of the two video qualities are to be interpreted in any way the viewer finds personally relevant, because they themselves are technical interpretations of an image through the eye of the camera.
